Ultra fast valve for industrial applications
Abstract : A Belgian company offers an ultra fast valve for industrial
applications. They are looking for partners in the field of molecular sieves for
technical co-operation, license/commercial agreement. The valve is simply
composed of one or more membranes that are placed on the perforated wall when
the valve is to be closed and rolled onto a base when the valve is to be opened.
These actions take place very quickly, as the elements to be moved are
lightweight.
The rolling valve is a special N-ways distributor. It consists of particular
seats with multiple openings that can be closed (or opened) progressively (and
very quickly) by membranes made of composite and especially designed materials.
The device can be equipped by electro pneumatic-type controls.
By studying the process of 02 production using the process of molecular sieves
on ambient air (an alternative process with a 3-stage sequence:
- Absorption by flow through a reservoir containing an adsorbent,
- Desorption by placing in vacuum,
- Purge by saturation of a portion of the finished product produced during the
previous sequence,
The entire process lasting less than 90 seconds) , it quickly became apparent
that the number of valves needed (6 per reactor with 3 reactors running) gave
rise to considerable time losses during opening, closing, and synchronising of
valves. These time losses are major when compared to the short 90-sec sequence
time required to carry out all 3 stages of oxygen production. Furthermore, such
losses reduce productivity and increase energy consumption.
The solution to this problem came about with the creation of a new type of valve
that is called membrane valve or rolling valve.
The principle of this valve can easily be understood if we observe what happens
whenever a sheet is placed on the protective grid of a fan: the sheet instantly
interrupts the flow regardless of the power of the motor.
The valve is simply composed of one or more membranes that are placed on the
perforated wall when the valve is to be closed and rolled onto a base when the
valve is to be opened. These opening and closing actions take place very
quickly, since the elements to be moved are very light. Despite the speed of
execution, the effects are gradual.
Applications:
- Absorption and desorption can be run by the valve
- Production of O2 (reagent: zeolite) , used in industrial furnaces (steel,
glass, cement) , reduction of NOx and decrease in energy consumption
- Production of N2 (reagent: activated charcoal)
- Trapping organic and toxic effluents
- Special air conditioning
- Quick opening and closing of hydraulics circuits
- Creation of pressure reducing valves
- Creation of immediate-reaction safety circuits
- Production of O2 in orbit for spacecraft (altitude of 12.000 m)
Main Advantages:
- Quick operation with gradual opening and closing to avoid water hammer
- Reduction in the number of valves and control motors for doing the same
functions
- Decrease in waste space
- Simple to create
- Reliable system
- Easy maintenance
- Easy to assemble and disassemble
- Important choice of constitutive materials
- Savings of space and energy compared to competing processes.
Innovative Aspects : The main innovative aspect relies on the opening and
closing system that can be gradual and extremely fast due to a specific and
innovative use of a membrane (membrane has never been used in such applications)

Development and construction of technological machinery
and equipment
Abstract : A Polish company based in the West of Poland specialises in advanced
statistical calculation services and the development of dynamic structures. The
office's offer includes design and supervision of the production of
technological machinery and equipment. In providing the services, it uses
state-of-the-art technology and scientific findings as well as its academic and
practical expertise. The company is interested in manufacturing co-operation.
The company offers research and development services that involve development
and construction of technological machinery and equipment as well as supervision
of the relevant production process.
It also offers development and construction services (3D/2D) with respect to
atypical technological machinery and equipment (models, forms, etc.) and steel
structures.
Their offer also includes technical consultancy with respect to designing and
construction of engineering structures. Structural strength analysis, machine
parts produced according to the finite element method. The preferred form of
co-operation is a manufacturing agreement.
Main Advantages:
The company offers fair commercial conditions with respect to the technology in
question. Owing to latest IT tools, they have been able to cut costs and
maintain high quality.
Innovative Aspects : The technology offer concerns mainly specialised and
atypical machinery, which is not produced in series. Therefore, the unit price
of such machines is remarkably higher than the price of standardised solutions.
